The core idea behind Math Anywhere is that we are surrounded by math all the time and we just don’t notice. This means any place and any moment is an opportunity to think about and talk about math. A recent trend affirms this idea. Who knew that the digits 6 and 7 nestled side by side were so abundant in our landscape? No one noticed until the kids started noticing. And now that kids are seeing it, it has become nearly impossible to “unsee.” The kids are making sure we do not ignore this previously innocuous digit duo, but in my experience, children often notice math that we don’t notice in places we don’t expect. We just need to pay attention to their ideas. And maybe also hope that the whole population of young people doesn’t attach to that same idea at the same time.
